Global Alliance Donates 3rd. Round of Funds to
International Organization for Migration (IOM)
On Friday, May 30th, 2014 representatives of the Global Alliance for the Rights of
Ethiopians (GARE) handed over a check in the amount of $50,000 to the International
Organization for Migration (IOM) to assist Ethiopians abused and displaced from Saudi
Arabia. This is the third installment making the total donation of the Alliance $112,000
since the crises started in early November 2013.
A delegation led by Tamagn Beyene, Chairman of the Alliance met with IOM officials led
by Ms. Maria Moreno, IOM’s External Relations Head and Chief Administrator at U.S
Association for International Migration in Washington D.C., to hand over the donation and
discussed issues related to the support that would be provided to the victims of the
displacement and future partnership with IOM on similar efforts.
Ms. Moreno thanked and appreciated the Ethiopian Diaspora for its effort to assist the
victims and stated that the current donation will be specifically allocated to help Ethiopians
in detention centers in Yemen, as requested by the Global Alliance. The Alliance is
planning to launch a fact finding mission in Yemen and IOM has agreed to share
information and avail the collaboration of its local office to the mission.
It was disclosed that the funds that was donated to IOM were raised from fundraising
efforts of grass roots partners of the Global Alliance in North America & Canada, Europe,
Africa and Asia. Ethiopians all over the world responded with generosity and unity of
purpose.
